Create your own flower arrangement while exploring the Japanese principles of balance, line and open space.
Ikebana is more than simply arranging flowers. It celebrates the natural shape of each flower and branch, using balance, line and open space to create something expressive and uniquely your own.
During this guided, hands-on session, you will create your own arrangement and experience a beautiful part of Japanese culture. No previous experience is required.
The session will take place in a dedicated area on the venue stage, providing participants with their own space away from general foot traffic.
Fresh flowers are included in the session price. Vases and all necessary equipment will be provided for use during the session.
Participants may take the flowers from their arrangement home afterwards. Please note that vases and other equipment are not included and must remain at the venue.
Admission to With Love, JAPAN is free. This is a separately ticketed session, and advance booking is required.
The session will be led by Tomoko Hirano, Director of the Sogetsu Ikebana Teachers’ Association, Auckland Branch.
Originally from Japan, Tomoko has lived in Auckland for 33 years and has more than 50 years of experience in floristry, including running her own business, HanaClub NZ.
She holds a Diploma in Teaching (Adult Learning) and received the Komon teaching qualification from the Sogetsu School in 2024. Tomoko teaches Ikebana to community groups, secondary schools and private groups, bringing extensive experience and a passion for sharing Japanese culture.
